1. Murchison Falls

History

Originally named Kabalega Falls, the park was established in 1952 and named after Sir Samuel Baker's patron, geologist Roderick Murchison.

2. Queen Elizabeth

Originally named Kazinga National Park when established in 1952, it was renamed in 1954 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's visit.

3. Kibale National Park

Known as the 'Primate Capital of the World,' this lush tropical rainforest hosts 13 primate species including the largest population of chimpanzees in East Africa.

History

Gazetted as a forest reserve in 1932 and upgraded to a national park in 1993 to protect its rich biodiversity and primate populations.

4. Bwindi

5. Mgahinga

History

Established in 1991 primarily to protect the mountain gorillas that move between Uganda, Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Uganda's smallest national park but part of the larger transboundary Virunga Conservation Area protecting mountain gorillas.

6. Lake Mburo

A compact park conveniently located near the capital, featuring rolling hills, acacia woodlands, and the lake itself, with zebras being the main attraction.

History

Originally a controlled hunting area in 1933, it was upgraded to a game reserve in 1963 and finally to a national park in 1983.

Uniqueness

The only national park in Uganda with a population of impalas and the only one where zebras are commonly seen.
